Brief Description of Research Project |
This project intends to collect and assemble data on rail networks, ports and major shippers in order to support modeling the economic impact of specific interruptions and/or closures of locks along the nation's inland waterway system, and more generally documenting the overall economic impact of current infrastructures on their localities. Also supported is the determination of how existing rail, water and highway networks support efficient intermodal transportation. Also of interest are secondary impacts on businesses and individuals from the loss of waterway or rail shipping access, associated employment, and congestion/safety/air quality impacts of modal shifts. In the long term, the research should lead to an ability to measure and quantify the overall impacts of rail and water infrastructure improvements by region and sub region, including the economic hinterlands of ports and terminals. |
