Brief Description of Research Project The objective of the 2012 and 2013 Rail and Intermodal Transportation Summer Youth Program is to encourage an interest and awareness in the educational programs and workforce opportunities available in the rail industry to today’s high school students. This week long summer program is a collaborative effort between Michigan Tech and the University of Wisconsin-Superior and will combine classroom modules on several basic topics in railway and intermodal transportation / engineering, such as safety, passenger and freight rail (including high speed rail), intermodal supply chains and logistics, track structure and signal systems. Classroom lectures and hands-on activities will be supplemented by field explorations to railroads and intermodal facilities in Marquette and Duluth region. The goal is to provide an opportunity to expose rail and intermodal transportation for up to twenty high school students (9-11 grade) with an interest in the area. NURail funding will assist by supplementing the student travel and living costs through scholarships.
